o.k. I did it....gulp....I applied for a big job with the Ministry of Culture.

  1. Yes Julie. It is the job I told you about on Thursday. As I mentioned, they head-hunted little old ME!

They are hiring temporarily (6 month contract). There is no job posting. One of the provincial museum advisors (there are 2 or 3) is retiring and they want to replace him temporarily and then once they have a temp replacement they would do a formal job competition (of course the temp person would have an edge on the permanent job). This is a really important job in the museum world. This position works to help museums across the province achieve professional standards and also administers provinicial funding for museums. There is a lot of travel involved and also a lot of public speaking engagements at conferences etc. The position they are hiring for covers all of Southwestern and Northwestern Ontario.

There is no way I was going to quit my current job without promise of a permanent job. As a result, I had decided not to apply but then THEY called me again and told me that they felt I was the ideal candidate and begged me to look into getting a leave of absence from my current position. So I looked into getting a temporary leave of absence from my job.

I talked it over with my boss and he was really supportive. What a great guy. He told me he didn't want me to move on, but it doesn't surprise him that they contacted me because I am "awesome". :) I told him it surprised the heck out of me and he told me I was just being humble! He said he would support an application for a temp. leave of absence. He said I would be foolish not to at least try as I would have my job waiting here for me if it was not a good fit and professionally it would be a really good learning experience. With a leave of absence from my current job there would be no risk for me. I could go for 6 months and then decide to come back here if things didn't work out.

Part of me doesn't want to go. But another part of me doesn't see myself doing my same old job forever. I'm totally bored with it and there is little or no room for change until my coworker retires in about 5 or so years. . Plus there is the money factor (the pay is a lot more than I make now).

So, I sent my resume to them and we will see what happens. Who knows??????

  3. Yes, they did! How crazy is that??? I got an email on Monday asking if I would be interested in working with them. I asked for details and told them I'd think about it. On Friday I told them I wouldn't quit my job for a temporary position said they understood the dilemma but reminded me that the person they hired temporarily would have the edge for the permanent job. They suggested I ask for a leave and and then asked me to quote "strongly reconsider." So I did! Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess.

  8. 'kay!

Just not sure if it is the right job for me. It is much more of a bureaucratic job than a creative job.

  9. Hey, Melissa! That is great news. You certainly deserve a break like this and who knows it might lead into something else during the six months. But I certainly miss seeing the Belleville Girls on Monday nights. Good Luck!

  10. Who says you can't bring a little creativity into the bureaucracy?

  11. It sounds like a terrific opportunity. Whether you stay or not, you will have gain invaluable strenght. And only by trying will you find out if it's for you. I must say I would be sad to see you go "for ever".
